Decluttering my life

It is time for me to shut down this blog.  I am grateful for the handful of you who are my faithful readers.  I am finding ways to lift my burdens & have more time with my family.  Downsizing from 2 blogs to 1 blog is one way I am doing this.  I will continue to declutter, but I will not be writing about it.  I hope you continue to declutter, too!

Insurance Cards

I wanted to register my Yukon today, but I only found expired insurance cards & Matt's current insurance card for his suburban in the glove box & my wallet.  Oops!  I found my current insurance cards and have put them in the Yukon & my wallet.  I am simplifying the old cards.

I have been going through my emails today and unsubscribing from unwanted email.  My overloaded inbox weighs me down!  I will look over my emails in the next few days to make sure I got it all.

CD Clutter

I was in my car, waiting for Zoe & Emily this evening and I had yet to declutter anything.  I went through the CDs & got rid of a few broken pieces from a CD case & a few CD inserts that didn't have a home due to broken cases.

Eleanor is hard on fashion boots.  I threw away 2 pairs that she wore out this winter.

Attic Clutter

My wonderful parents let us store clothes & things in their attic.  I spent time in there today digging out Spring & Summer clothing.  I noticed clothing that I knew would never get worn & my kids rejected some clothing that I had saved for them, so I am simplifying the unwanted clothes.  They will get dropped off at Goodwill in the near future.

Noah's Decluttering

Noah is taking charge of decluttering this morning.  He wanted to organize his box of toys.  I like it!  He is getting rid of clutter & moving toys to where they should be.  :-)

Craft Box

I took everything out of our craft box this morning.  I threw away old glue, broken popsicle sticks, worn out paint brushes & other clutter.  I moved some of the supplies to where they belong & I put the rest of the supplies back into the craft box.

Crayons

Our crayon basket was overflowing with crayons.  I threw away the old, broken crayons & now we have a half-full basket of nice looking, fully functioning crayons.  It looks so much better & now crayons won't be falling onto the floor when the kids carry the basket around.  :-)

Noah needs a new plastic softball because the one he had got run over and I threw it away today.

New Favorite Coat

Noah has a coat that he absolutely loves, but it is stained & it has a hole in it.  He had another very nice looking coat tucked away in his closet, so I dug it out today & announced that he now has a new favorite coat.  Luckily, he agreed!  I am getting rid of his worn out coat before he changes his mind!

Noah's pajamas

Last night, Noah wore a pajama shirt that didn't cover his belly & pajama pants that didn't reach his ankles.  It was quite the sight!  I bought him new pajamas today, so his too small pajamas, plus a few pajama pants without tops will be given away.

Hidden Clutter

Noah & I had a picnic in the Yukon today.  When I lifted up the seats to make a flat surface, I discovered hidden trash & toys.  I took this clutter out of the Yukon & threw it away or put it away.

Shoe Box

I have been tripping over a shoe box that Noah was collecting buttons in.  My buttons that I already have a container for.  I put the buttons away and threw the box away.

Wash cloths

I am done using wash cloths to clean sticky faces & hands, so I am simplifying them.  Well, some of them anyway.  Matt is going to use some, I saved a few for cleaning & Zoe is bringing one to youth conference.

I had a pile of school papers & mail that I finally went through today.  My sweet sister-in-law bought me containers to get rid of my kitchen paper clutter, but I still pile papers on our washer.  :-(

Knitting Needles

We had a Relief Society activity a few months ago where we learned how to knit.  I used my grandmother's knitting needles and did a tiny bit of knitting.  I brought home my grandmother's knitting needles and put the needles & yarn in a drawer.  I know myself.  I will never get the knitting out again, so I have the needles in a bag to bring to my grandmother tomorrow.

Lawn Clutter

Now that the snow has melted off the lawn, I can work on cleaning it up.  There was some trash that I picked up and threw away today, including some broken toys.

Decluttered...sort of

We live in a trailer that doesn't have bedroom doors.  When the kids were younger, we put up a board at bedtime, so they wouldn't keep wandering out for whatever excuse they could think of.  We no longer use the board for bedtime, but it gets used once in awhile for projects.  I decided to simplify the board from our trailer and put it in the new house, which is currently the construction zone.  I consider this decluttering since I removed the board from our living space.  :-)

One too many times

I threw away a ribbon that came with a birthday package several months ago.  The girls were using it as a hair ribbon, but I got tired of seeing it on the floor.  So, I picked it up & tossed it.

Bath Toys

Kate wanted to bring a new McDonald's toy into the bath this evening.  I told her she could if we could simplify most of the bath toys that were already in the bathtub.  She agreed. :-)

Lids

I went through our container lids this evening and matched them to the containers (mostly sour cream containers).  We had a lot of extra lids, so I got rid of them.

Cluttered Shelf

I motivated myself to clean off a shelf in our bedroom that was collecting clutter & misplaced items.  I put the misplaced items where they go, found a new spot for some items that I wanted to keep, but not on the shelf & I threw away the items that were trash or useless.  The shelf space looks so much better!

I found (what I thought to be) clutter in our monopoly game bag that I simplified.  The kids find weird places to put things!

Paper Bag

That's right.  I threw away a paper bag today that was clutter in my kitchen.  I thought about keeping it in case I need it in the future, but then I thought about the plastic bags I save to use, so I decided the paper bag could go.

Kate's shirt

Kate simplified for me today, which worked out perfect because I haven't been home much today.  Kate got some hand-me-down clothing several weeks ago, but she decided today that she didn't want to keep one of the shirts.  Works for me!

Socks

I bought myself new socks today.  If I keep these old socks (shown above), they will turn into clutter and just take up space.  I have no use for them anymore, so out they go.
I have a daughter who needs to work on getting rid of the old thing after she buys something new to replace it!

A magnet & Clothes

I tossed a zebra magnet that I wanted to get rid of months ago, but one of the kids spotted it and put it back on the fridge.  I went through Noah's clothes this evening when he wasn't home and filled a grocery bag full of clothes he doesn't wear to give to Finn.  We have limited space for clothing around here!

Junk Drawer Clutter

I emptied out our junk drawer when we discovered a mouse was getting into it.  That was months ago.  I have been putting stuff back into the drawer as I use it.  There was still some stuff left that I hadn't used yet, so I put away what I will use eventually and tossed the rest.

Giving back what is borrowed

I didn't get rid of anything that was mine today, but I did give back a few items that a friend had lent to me.  I'm counting that as simplifying.

Daffy Duck Clip

This magnetic clip was holding a bunch of papers on the side of our washer/dryer.  I simplified most of the papers and put the rest of the papers in a different spot.  Now, I am ready to simplify this clip.

Cute Shirt

I am cleaning out my closet.  I like this LandsEnd shirt (size S 6-8), but I have outgrown it.  I could keep it and hope that I lose weight to fit into it again, but I'm done doing that.  I'm only keeping clothes that fit me.  If I do lose weight and need smaller clothes, then off to Goodwill I go. :-) 

Exercise Top

I wore this when I did aerobics, but now I walk and I don't wear it anymore, so I am giving it away.  It is an ativa, size M.

Capri Jeans

I bought these Old Navy capri jeans last Summer. I ended up not liking them, but I wore them because I spent money on them.  I don't plan on wearing them this Summer, so I am simplifying them.  They are a stretch material, which I like, but these capris stretch too much around the waist & I'm constantly tugging them up.  I should have bought a smaller size I guess.  These capris are a size 12.

Towel

Zach received a special baptism towel on Sunday, which he will now use as his bath towel.  So, I am giving his old bath towel to Goodwill.

I have a basket that holds school papers, which was getting too full.  I went through the papers this evening.  I set aside some stories & other keepsakes to save, I tossed a bunch of the papers & I kept the papers that we still need for this school year in the basket.

Every time I think about getting rid of this cookbook, I talk myself out of it because it has fun things to create with the kids!  However, I never get it out to actually make things with the kids.  Well, I'm not talking myself out of getting rid of it this time.  I am simplifying the clutter.  It may not be clutter for you, though.  :-)

Red Boots

Snowpants

On the last day of school before February vacation, Kate came home with a very wet backside.  Her wonderful, a bit too short pink snow pants stopped protecting her against the cold, wet snow.  So, out they go!

Lidless Container

I finally got rid of an empty butter tub today that was missing a lid.  I have other containers with lids.  I don't need the lidless one anymore.

I was looking for Kate's gift card to Claire's when I came across 2 membership cards, one for the children's museum & one for the pool that had expired.  I threw them away.

Kid Clutter

I just organized our cup shelf & decided that Zach wouldn't miss the little chocolate milk bottle that he saved.  It was way in the back, forgotten.  I don't recommend simplifying a spouse's clutter without his/her permission, but I am on board with getting rid of kid clutter without permission!

Coupons

I'm not one to cut and use a lot of coupons because they expire before I remember to use them.  I went through the few coupons I have and simplified a couple that had expired and I actually used a coupon today!  Do you have expired coupons around?

Another broken backpack

I am done buying cheap backpacks.  Eleanor's zipper broke just like Kate's so this backpack is no longer useful!  Out it goes.

Car Clutter

My cup holders in between the driver & passenger seats were filled with trash, sunflower seeds, a clothespin & a Cracker Jack prize.  I put the clothespin away, threw away the rest & now I can actually put cups in my cup holders again.  :-) 

Paper Clutter

I got rid of paper clutter that was on my fridge today.  Papers that had future dates on them, I put the dates on the calendar and tossed the papers.  Papers that had information gone by on them, I tossed.  How does the outside of your fridge look?

Computer Armoir

This computer armoir has turned into a dust/clutter collector.  It has served us well in the past when we had a desktop computer, but now it just stresses me out when I think about keeping it clean.  The doors are broken & it is no longer a beautiful piece of furniture to have in our home.

Pillow Case

Kate received a beautiful, personalized pillow case for her birthday, so it is time to say goodbye to her old one.  This pillow case has been used a lot around here, starting with Zoe.  Do you hold onto items that you no longer use and will never use again because they hold memories?  Take a picture of the items and then simplify them.  Pictures take up less space.  :-)

Christmas Cards

I usually run out of our family picture Christmas cards before I am done sending out Christmas cards, so this past Christmas I bought more than I usually do.  That left me with extra cards.  Clutter.  I am keeping one of our cards to put in our memory box and throwing the rest away.  Next year, I will do a better job of giving away all of our cards!

Empty Bottle

I'm not good at remembering to put this lice prevention spray on my kids, so when I went to put it on Kate yesterday, I discovered the bottle was empty.  Well, at least my kids are remembering to use it!  I need to get a new bottle.  Lice prevention spray is not clutter, but an empty bottle of it is!

It has been 4 years since we have had a baby around here and it will be years before we have grandchildren around.  I think it is time to simplify these spoons.

Envelopes

After every birthday, my kids get their picture taken at Walmart.  I have taken the portrait envelopes that are not in storage yet

and have decluttered all but one envelope that now holds all the extra pictures.

Do I need the extra pictures?  I'm debating.  I have kept a 5x7 of each picture, but do I need the extra wallet and smaller sizes?

Fishing Vest

Noah had this observation when he recently put on his fishing vest..."It doesn't cover my shirt like it used to!"  It is sad, but true.  Noah (age 4) has outgrown this size small fishing vest.

Socks

My favorite socks have holes in them. :-(  Wearing holey socks does not make me feel beautiful, so out they go.

NOTHING to wear!

Kate (5) doesn't like any of her clothes!  She loves getting hand-me-downs, but then she only wears a few of them.  She is very picky about the way clothes fit and look.  This morning, she had NOTHING to wear even though her drawers are full of clothes.  She put on a pair of black pants this morning, but she complained that they were too tight.  I am weeding out her clothes now as she complains about them, so the black pants are going to a friend at church.  I'll have Kate down to 2 or 3 outfits in no time!

Regret

Do you shy away from decluttering because you are afraid that you will need/want the decluttered item after it is gone?  That does happen, but less often than you think.  I got rid of our Harry Potter books years ago when I decided we didn't need to keep books that we could get at the library.  Well, now I have kids that want to read the Harry Potter books and I don't have easy access to them.  Is this the end of the world?  No, but it IS a pain in the behind when the library copy is already signed out!  Part of me regrets giving the books away and is thinking about buying them again, but the other part of me is saying be happy with less books and enjoy the access to many libraries that have wonderful books!  The kids can get hooked on a different book or series while they wait for an available copy of the 4th Harry Potter book.  We'll see which part of me wins.  :-)

I got rid of earrings today that didn't have a match.  I don't think I am going to regret that.

Ice Skates

My kids & I went ice skating for the 1st time this season today.  As I looked through the ice skate box, I discovered a pair that should have been simplified at the end of last season.

I'm not sure what size they are, but I do know that Emily wore them last season.  I'm thinking they are a women's size 7 or 8.

Chips

If you went through your cupboards or refrigerator would you find food you didn't even know you had?  Do you have expired food hanging around? 

We have accumulated a lot of chips.  Opened chip bags that are brought home from my parents' house get forgotten as they are tucked away in a bucket.  I let the kids eat chips after school today to see which chips are still good.  We threw away one empty bag of Smartfood popcorn after the kids finished it off.  That was my decluttering for the day.  :-)

Littlest Pet Shop

Lalaloopsy is in, so out with Littlest Pet Shop.  I have only found a frog to go with this shop, but I know we have more animals.  The hunt continues!

Goodbye favorite jeans

Eleanor was finally convinced this morning that she has outgrown her favorite jeans.  She outgrew them awhile ago. 

We got our money's worth out of these Old Navy size 7 Bootcut jeans.

It can be hard to let go of comfortable, broken in clothing, but when you are squeezing yourself into them, it is time to say goodbye.

Converting this jean material into something adorable is not one of my skills, but maybe it is one of yours.  You may also need a good pair of play jeans.

Water bottles

I was looking for a water bottle for Zoe this morning and found 2 water bottles that are not being used.  The pink water bottle has a lost cover.  I bought the princess water bottle for Kate before school.  She used it for a few weeks, but then decided she didn't like it because it's hard to suck the water out of it.

Nameless Toy

I don't have anything to give away today.  I found a useless toy in my bag/purse this morning, so I tossed it in the trash.  Out of sight, out of mind.  No one will miss it.  Getting rid of kids' toys can be tricky.  Often, I will go through the toys while my kids are away from home.  If my kids see me tossing something of theirs, they are immediately attracted to it and can't live without it...even if they haven't played with it for months.  One option is to hide the toy(s) and see if the toy is missed.  After a set amount of time, simplify the toy if it is not missed.  If your kids are like mine, they have plenty of other toys to play with!  A challenge for all of us with kids at home is to only have toys that are used often.  Separate the toys into 3 categories...used often, used sometimes & rarely used.  Weed out the rarely used toys & work your way to what is used most often.  This is something I need to work on myself!

Backpack

I am getting rid of this backpack that I bought in August because the main zipper broke.  I know myself well enough to know that I will never fix this backpack.  Therefore, it will never get used again here making it clutter.   It has wear and tear along the bottom.  I would not recommend this backpack, but if you can fix a zipper and your little girl really wants it, it is yours.

 This girls' shirt is a Lands' End brand and is a size 7-8.  In the picture below, you can see the pattern and a paint stain on one of the sleeves near the wrist that blends in with the pattern.

Christmas Stocking

A few years ago, we were given beautiful, handmade Christmas stockings.  We love them & we use them.  I held on to the Christmas stocking shown above because it has a rich red color, it is a good size (16" top to heel, 19" top to toe & 10" wide at the top - 7 1/2" wide just above the foot; toe to heel is 10") & it is soft.  However, we don't use it anymore.  It just sits in the box and is forgotten.
